On 11th April 2017, Microsoft terminated support for its Windows Exchange Server 2007 server solution.
This means that the software publisher no longer provides technical support or bug and security patches. Companies that are still running Exchange 2007 – and according to a report from winfuture.de, there are still quite a few – are being forced to migrate.
A direct switch from Windows Exchange Server 2007 to the newest version, Microsoft Exchange Server 2016, is not possible. A direct migration is only possible to Microsoft Exchange 2010 and 2013. VENDOSOFT GmbH sells both versions as inexpensive used software.
“If the alternative of used software did not exist, those using Exchange Servers 2007 would have to switch to Exchange 2016 and then downgrade”, said Björn Orth, Managing Director of VENDOSOFT GmbH. Costs would be approximately €700 per license. VENDOSOFT offers its customers savings of 54% or 65% respectively on Exchange 2010 and 2013. The company also carries Exchange Server 2016 in its portfolio – sold used for 43% below the original price!
The licensing expert, Orth, recommends that companies switch from Exchange 2007 to a subsequent version in order to avoid any security risks. “With Microsoft Exchange 2010, 2013 or even 2016 (used and new!), we have all the alternatives.”
